I am a senior lieutenant in reserve of Soviet Army myself (retired due emigration) and I know what I am saying.
In the ‘evil’ army of the ‘evil country’ an army guard had to warn approaching to a secret post stranger -’Stop! Who is approaching?’ If the suspect did not answer and continued then the guard yelling – ‘I will shoot!’ and shot at blank. If the suspect continued approaching, then the guard had to shoot, but had to be prepared to answer tough questioning -’Why he did not TARGET the legs of the suspect.”
